FAQs

When and where are tryouts for the 2025-2026 season?

Tryouts are on July 9th & 10th for 14u-18u girls.  All tryouts are at the Guilderland YMCA.   14u-15u tryouts are from 6-7:30pm and 16u-18u tryouts are from 7:30-9pm.

Who can tryout for Jaguars Volleyball Club?

Anyone can tryout from any school district with any level of experience.

Do I need to attend all tryout dates?

It is strongly encouraged that you attend as many tryout dates as possible. If you are unable to attend the tryout dates please make every effort to attend the makeup tryout dates.

When are the makeup tryout dates?

The makeup tryouts are on July 16th & 17th from 6-7:30pm for 14u-18u girls. Makeup tryouts are at the Guilderland YMCA.  Anyone who did not attend both tryout days can attend the makeup tryouts. If coaches are undecided about players from the first tryout week, players may be invited to the makeup tryout for a third look. This is not an extra fee.

What age group am I eligible for?

Please see the chart above or refer to the USAV Age Definition Chart. Players are not able to play down, but players are able to play up.  Please sign up for tryouts with the age group you would like to tryout for.  Coaches have the final say on team placements.

How are teams selected?

Teams are selected based on a combination of skill evaluation, athleticism, attitude, effort, positional needs, and coachability. Tryouts allow coaches to assess players in both individual drills and game-like situations to build balanced, competitive teams at each age level.

How many players will be on each team?

Most teams will have 10–11 players, depending on the age group and team level. We keep rosters small enough to maximize playing time and development, but large enough to account for injuries or conflicts during the season.

How will we know if our child had made a team?

Families will receive an email within1-2 weeks after the final tryout session. The email will include the team placement (if selected) and next steps to confirm your child’s spot. Some players may be offered a position after the first tryout.

What do we do when our child accepts a position on a team?

Once you receive a team offer, you'll follow the link in the email to formally accept the position, submit an initial deposit, and complete the online registration. A deadline to accept will be provided in the email.

How long do I have to accept a position once offered?

According to the new Excelsior Empire Region Tryout Policy, all players have 9 days to accept their position from the time the offer email is sent.

How much does club/travel volleyball cost?

Club fees vary by team and season length, but typically range from $1500 to $2200 depending on age group, tournament schedule, and team level. Please see our Club Tuition Page for more information.

When does the season start?

We typically begin practices mid November.

When does the season end?

The regional tournament for 11u-13u is the last week in April and for 14u-17u the first weekend in May.  The 18u regional tournament is typically in mid April.

Do you have local tournament only teams?

Since Covid there has not been enough local tournaments so all teams will participate in a mix of local and travel tournaments.

How far are travel tournaments?

The travel tournaments we typically attend are in Victor, NY, Syracuse, NY, Boston, MA, Providence, RI, Hartford, CT.

How many practices are there per week?

11u - 18u teams will practice 2 nights per week for 1.5 or 2 hours per night.

Do you offer any fundraisers to offset club fees?

Yes! We organize a David's Cookie Dough Fundraiser at the beginning of the season for the entire club and throughout the season each team may organize other fundraisers as well.

What is included in the Club Tuition?

Club tuition for our 11u-18u teams includes gym rental fees, tournament fees, equipment, coaches expenses, administrative fees, 3 uniforms, 2 arm sleeves, team tee shirt and backpack. Balltime/Hudl is also included fro 16u-18u.

What is not included in the Club Tuition?

Not included in the club tuition is USAV Insurance Registration ($70) and AAU Insurance Registration ($45). Additional costs for traveling, hotel, food, tournament entry fee, etc. is not included.

Tournaments past regionals such as USAV Nationals or any other extra tournaments the team decides they would like to participate in are not included in the initial club tuition.

Why does club volleyball cost so much?

We operate as close to full-cost budgeting as possible and budget for all known costs up front. Gym rentals are one of the largest expenditures around $125/hour. Since we practice twice a week this cost adds up very quickly. Our fees are very comparable to most clubs in our area.  Some clubs may not incorporate tournament fees or uniform fees into their advertised clubs cost.  We offer monthly payment plans for all levels to spread out these costs.

When is the club fee due?

A $300-$400 non refundable deposit will be due at the time of accepting a position on Sports Engine. The remaining balance will be split into a payment plan of the parents choosing at time of registration. The options are 2 payments, 4 payments or 6 payments(monthly).

How many tournament play dates are there?

When will you be notified if you made a team or not?

Team invitations will be emailed within 1-10 days of the final tryout for each age group. Please check your email (including spam/junk folders) during that time.

Invitations are sent out in staggered waves, starting with older age groups first. In some cases, partial team invitations are sent first, especially for essential positions like setters or middles, to secure those key roles. Once those offers are accepted, the remaining invitations will follow.

Once an offer is made, families will have 9 days to accept or decline. If a player declines or does not respond by the 9th day, the spot will be offered to another athlete.

Please also note that makeup tryouts may impact the timing of some invitations. While some offers may go out earlier, final team placements will not be completed until all makeup tryouts have taken place, to ensure every athlete has a fair opportunity.

No player is considered cut until they receive an official email stating so. If you haven’t received an invitation yet, it may still be coming.
